Desperate Gully Hideout
- Prerequisite: Approach the hideout
- Suggested Level: 35
- Location Reward: 600 XP
- Location Objectives: Kill One Captain, Loot One Treasure
Send Senu up to the north to locate the manuscript inside the Desperate Gully Hideout. Most of the bandits are in the hideout hole, which makes it easy for you to circle around the hideout using the cliff edges and tall grass for cover. Take out the one bandit that patrols the walkway to the top of the hideout; then shoot the fish in the barrel. Use arrows or a sleep dart and arrow combo. This is not a difficult area to clean out. The bandit with the manuscript is equipped with a shield and large sword. Defeat him to grab the De Architectura manuscript. Kill the captain and collect the treasure to complete the location objective.
Ride southwest to the aqueduct to return the manuscript to Vitruvius. Travel southeast to Balagrae to speak to Praxilla at her clinic. Travel southeast out of Balagrae toward the marker and then send Senu up to locate Crios when you get close. You’ll find Crios stranded on a large boulder with a circling, hungry lion.
Jump onto the boulder and locate the lion circling below. Shoot it with arrows or slay it with a weapon. Or, if you have the ability, tame it. Talk to Crios once the lion is gone. Use the Viewpoint at the Oracle of Apollo to Fast Travel to your gathering of close friends. Approach them as they stand waiting for you at the overlook.
Side Quest: Cat and Mouse
- Prerequisite: Complete Side Quest: The Mousetrap
- Suggested Level: 36
- Rewards: 3,000 XP
Track down the Mouse, who is held captive in a jail cart traveling the road near the Apollonion of Cyrene. The driver is alone with no support. Simply follow the cart and hit the driver with a warrior arrow or put the horses to sleep with sleep darts to buy you more time to assassinate the driver.
Open the cage and pick up the Mouse. Carry him away from the cart until the “Speak to the Mouse” objective becomes active. Then drop him.
Head northeast to the Baths and find the open window up on the building’s southwest side. There are many soldiers patrolling inside; having direct entry into the investigation room makes things easier. Inspect the bloodstains on the floor near the locked door to reach the next objective.
Climb the wall behind the bed with the beads clue on it; then stand on the top and look down at the few guards below. One is guarding the room you need to get into. Throw sleep darts at one or both of the guards and then drop-assassinate the other. Run into the room quickly, and investigate Paulus Aurelius’s body in the back before more guards track you down. You acquire the On the Usurer Paulus Aurelius note, which names the actor Metrobius as the next victim.
Get back to the investigation room by climbing the walls. Exit the Baths through the same open window used to enter. Mount up and ride to the amphitheater in northwest Cyrene. On the ground before the stage is another dead body, but you need to destroy the lion before you can investigate.
Interact with Metrobius’s corpse to obtain the On the Pickled Ham Metrobius note. The note mentions the next scene takes place at the brothel, the Wolf’s Den. Mount up and ride southeast to the Wolf’s Den. Have the warrior bow ready before you approach the body.
You find yet another note on the dead victim: On my father the Whorer Akakios. It reads, “Father you die. You will be quiet now mother?” As soon as you are done examining the father, draw your warrior bow and look west to the open doorway. The murderer is coming at you from inside the building. Fill him with holes. Confirm the kill to receive the On Vesta’s Son Oidipous note.
Travel north to find the Mouse hiding in some bushes south of the Temple of Zeus. You let him know that he is in the free and clear, the killer has been killed, but you have his letters as proof.
Side Quest: Absolute Power
- Prerequisite: Discover Kyrenaika
- Suggested Level: 36
- Rewards: 1 Ability Point
Visit and speak with Diocles in Cyrene’s town square to begin this quest. Send Senu up to locate Simonides. He’s to the south in the craftsmen district. You can find him on the ground in a small alley near the south wall walk. Speak to him. Pick him up and carry him.
Either carry Simonides and run or put him on a horse and deliver him to Diocles’s house to the northwest. Leander’s farm is 1,240 meters to the east in Marmarica. Ride there now. When close, send Senu up to pinpoint the ledger. The villa is heavily guarded by soldiers. Make a dash for the marker with the most direct route possible, taking out only the guards who try to stop you. Use chain attacks when faced with more than one enemy at a time.
Get to the villa’s second floor and loot the two treasures in the same room as the ledger to complete the location objective. Race west back to Cyrene to find Diocles in the Apollonion of Cyrene. Defeat the two soldiers at the top of the steps.
Rush inside and stop the soldiers from killing Diocles. They come in through the back entrance. Diocles assists in his own defense. After killing the four soldiers, Diocles thanks you and you receive an Ability Point.
Side Quest: Are you Not Entertained?
- Prerequisite: Discover Kyrenaika
- Suggested Level: 37
- Rewards: 3,000 XP, Rare Regular Sword
Read the sign on the wall at the stairs of the gladiator arena, or just go to the gladiator school to begin this quest. The lanista says his champion fighter, the Thracian Bear, has escaped and there’s a bounty on his head. Follow the lanista into the next area to the west, where he will pit you against three of his gladiators.
The Level 35 gladiators are pushovers compared to the gladiators you fought in the arena or any of the Roman soldiers you’ve crossed. Slaughter them to prove your worth. Use a long heavy blunt or heavy blade to strike multiple opponents at once. Talk to the lanista, who just witnessed you slaughter his best remaining gladiators.
Travel northeast to the Silphion Farm, where two lions roam the grounds. Kill them so you can investigate the brutal scene at the farm. Inspect the mutilated bodies on the ground just outside the barn. Use Animus Pulse to find more clues, like the body facedown with arrows in its back inside the barn. Inspect the two bodies bound and secured to the wall, one with a spear in the back. Shoot arrows into the well cover inside the barn to reach the clue that pings underneath the ground. Jump into the well.
Down below, you find a letter on a table: My Friends and Saviors. Travel northeast to the fishing village and find the gladiator on the beach. He tells you he threw the lanista’s sword in the sea.
Send Senu up to locate the sword in the water just off the pier to the east. Jump off the pier and dive down to the marked sword. Interact with it to pick it up. Get out of the water and send Senu up to mark the soldiers who have now approached Polymestor onshore where you left him. Six soldiers surround him. Before you run up to the group, take a few of them out with arrows from a distance. Then run in and attack. Fight by the gladiator’s side to eliminate the threat.
After the battle is won, the Bear thanks you and lets you keep the Rare regular word: Sword of the Free. You do not need to return it to that shady lanista.
