Public Events are enemy incursions that all Guardians within a public space Sector can join in to thwart. There is either zero or one Public Event active in your Sector at any one time. Public Events become available from the very first moment you are able to explore the European Dead Zone, once you complete Campaign Mission: Spark and you have access to this word.

There are two types of Public Events: “Full” sometimes known as “Heroic” and “Secret” sometimes known as “Hidden”.
Full Public Events
These are easily found when available. Your HUD receives a countdown to the Public Event in your Sector, and a location marker appears on your map. You may sometimes also launch a Public Event from a flag located at one of two possible main locations within the Sector. If your Sector does not have a Public Event that is active, check your in-game map, which also shows Public Events that are expected in other Sectors on the World where you are located. Full Public Events are usually timer-based and require you to work together with other Guardians to stop an enemy invasion.
Heroic Completion
Full Public Events can be completed adequately or perfectly. Finish one adequately, and depending on your actions, you can receive a good “Bronze”, better “Silver”, or best “Gold” rating. These are explained later in this chapter. Finish a Full Public Event perfectly, which requires a special set of circumstances explained in this chapter, and expect to receive additional rewards. This is known as completing the “Heroic” requirement of the event.
Secret Public Events
The second type of Public Event is almost completely hidden from view and usually chanced upon. There is no grand announcement; there’s just a brief text message in the lower-left area of your screen giving you a clue that a certain Secret Public Event is active, and this doesn’t happen all the time. These Public Events are much smaller in scale and have a variety of rewards ranging from engrams from a foe you defeat to a Boss Chest.
Full Public Event Types
This section details the eight different Full Public Events, which Sectors have access to the event type, and how to both complete it and achieve a Heroic rating for each of them.
Cabal Excavation
A Cabal ship appears and drops in a drilling rig. Several impressively potent lasers firing down mortars guard it, with Cabal troops to back up the drill itself. Capture the drill from the Cabal.
Locations:
- EDZ: Winding Cove
- Io: Lost Oasis, The Rupture
Once the drilling rig lands, you are directed to stand in the circular capture footprint around the drill itself. Red lasers and white ground target circles are a prequel to mortar fire, which drops randomly around the drill. Watch for the targeting laser before the mortal drops to avoid these attacks. Cabal troop reinforcements, including the expected Legionaries, Incendiors, Phalanxes, and Psions, appear to thwart you. You must neutralize them despite your lack of cover, as you must stay within the drill footprint. Gold rank is awarded if Guardians can fully capture the drill before the time runs out.
Heroic Objective: Keep an eye on the percentage countdown. When the drill has been 30 percent captured, a Cabal Mosquito ship flies around the area of the drill and shoots at you. It periodically flies off and then returns. Destroying the Mosquito triggers the Heroic objective, and a Boss Centurion appears, dropping in from a pod. During this phase, mortar fire is no longer random and actively targets all Guardians. You must defeat the Centurion to grant Guardians Heroic tier rewards. Otherwise, you receive a Gold rank for reaching the Heroic objective.
Glimmer Extraction
Those with previous Destiny experience may remember a similar event to this. A small mining drill and a complement of Fallen are attempting to mine Glimmer. You’re here to stop this from happening in as many locations as the Fallen appear during this event.
Locations:
- EDZ: Trostland, The Sludge, The Gulch, Firebase Hades
- Nessus: The Tangle (2), The Cistern, Glade of Echoes
A group of Fallen appears with a drill, and the foes seem to be extracting Glimmer from the ground. Guardians must defeat the Fallen commanders before the time runs out. Destroy three of these “drill protectors,” and a Elite Captain appears.
The drill has a transmitter that causes it to disappear and reappear in a new location within the Sector after each commander is slain. The event has 1-3 (usually 2-3) waves of this that become progressively harder. Gold rank is achieved if Guardians can eliminate the commanders in each wave before the timer runs out.
Heroic Objective: During each wave, a small Glimmer refinery appears near the drill, for up to three refineries at the third wave. Destroying the refinery at any location prevents that refinery from appearing at the next wave location. Heroic objective commences when you’ve destroyed a total of three refineries. The drill explodes, dropping its precious cargo of Glimmer onto the ground.
Guardians must stand in a capture ring on the Glimmer to transmat it while defending against waves of Fallen reinforcements, including a Boss Captain that spawns halfway into the transmat progress. Completing the Glimmer transmat before the time runs out grants you Heroic tier rewards. Otherwise, you receive a Gold rank for reaching the Heroic objective.
Injection Rig
The Cabal command is about to deploy a mobile outpost into the Sector for an information-gathering mission. It can also be seen as a show of force. You have a golden opportunity to assault and destroy this valued Cabal asset and help inch back their invasion.
Locations:
- EDZ: The Gulch, Sunken Isles
- Nessus: The Cistern
A Cabal ship appears in the sky and drops in a mobile Cabal injection rig base with a Spirelord Psion and some reinforcements. You are instructed to kill the Psion. Once this occurs, the spire activates a defensive purge and creates a force field around the rig. Guardians and enemies inside this shield receive burning damage that continues to inflict pain until death, unless you evacuates out of the field. Once the purge is completed, another Psion spawns, and this foe requires you to kill them. Then, a second purge occurs, and the process repeats one more time. So, you have a total of three Infiltration Psions to defeat and three purges to avoid.
After defeated the third Psion, a Valus Centurion arrives via drop pod. Gold rank is achieved if you can defeat the Centurion before the time runs out. Naturally, there are additional Cabal forces that also attempt to stop you. These are secondary targets, but you may be required to defeat them before you’re safe enough to tackle the Psions and Centurion.
Defeating the Centurion causes the spire to explode in a rather spectacular fashion as the structure attempts to jet away.
Heroic Objective: Once the event begins, and during each of the purge phases, red-hot heat vents open on the rig structure. Be sure to shoot these open vents to inflict damage. These vents are on tiers along the structure, at the top, middle, and bottom. You must destroy each tier before the next one opens.
When looking at the vents, there are three top tier vents that open, and three middle tier vents that open. Shoot any of them, but have multiple Guardians concentrate on one specific vent to quicken this process. When the bottom tier vents are accessible, only one opens, so find it quickly. If you destroy all three tiers of vents before the end of the third and last purge and defeat all three Psions, two Dreg Interceptors appear along with the Valus Centurion.
Now, defeat the Centurion to receive the Heroic reward. The Interceptors are not necessary to destroy, but they are a visual representation that the Heroic reward is still available. If you don’t slay the Centurion, you still receive the Gold rank for unlocking the Heroic objective
